Liesl shurtliff books5/13/2023 ![]() I also felt that the book did have a moral, as all fairy tales should, but it is one that creeps up on you at the end and is such a great discussion starter. ![]() This specific retelling has jumped to become one of my favorites because I felt that she has made a wonderful, fantastical world and was able to see Rumpelstiltskin as more than just an antagonist. ![]() Review: I love fairy tale retellings! They are so clever and I am so impressed with how an author can read a story and then think up a prequel or a different version of it. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship-and a cheeky sense of humor-he just might triumph in the end. To break the spell, Rump must go on a perilous quest, fighting off pixies, trolls, poison apples, and a wickedly foolish queen. With each thread he spins, he weaves himself deeper into a curse. His best friend, Red Riding Hood, warns him that magic is dangerous, and she’s right. Rump discovers he has a gift for spinning straw into gold. ![]() Goodreads Summary: In a magical kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone’s joke. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. ![]()

![]() The financial sector drives the high-end art market to great heights of absurdity because high-end art can be tax dodges and a show of conspicuous consumption for the obscenely wealthy. ![]() Why would anyone pay $12 million for the decaying carcass of a shark suspended in a small, fake aquarium? Is it the lure of acquiring anything by Damien Hirst, the most shameless self-promoter since Salvador Dali? The quasi-philosophical title of the shark is "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living." Does the title alone qualify it as art because it gives the viewers a hint that it is a memento mori? Maybe, but the real question of this book is "How does the art world assign value to art, and why do people pay it?" ![]()

Ian rankin knots and crosses review5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() "Those are basically my memories," explains Rankin. He remembers the family picnics at Loch Leven, the community he grew up in and holidays in St Andrews. Rebus reminisces about his childhood as he pulls off the motorway at Kinross. ![]() "A relationship would completely destroy the working dynamic between them." Favourite description of Scotland: Strip Jack "Just that tiny little reaction of her flinching gives a richness to their relationship that a thousand words of trying to spell it out wouldn't do," says Rankin. She flinches, thinking he is making a pass at her, but neither of them wants a romantic relationship. Sitting together in the car, Rebus reaches across Siobhan's legs to retrieve something from the glove compartment. "I don't always manage to surprise Rebus, but I like the fact that I did this time." Favourite scene between Rebus and Siobhan: Set In Darkness "Rebus' world is off kilter completely," says Rankin. There in the bar, singing a Burns song is his nemesis Cafferty, who Rebus believes is safely locked up in jail. A window looks into the bar and as Rebus glances in, he doubles back. Rebus decides to nip down to the bathroom, which can be reached without entering the pub. Rankin's favourite Rebus pub scene takes place not in his usual haunt, the Oxford Bar, but in the Royal Oak. ![]()
